MR - Freedom Writers

This picture is of the real Freedom Writers, the actual class along with the real Erin Gruwell.

FREEDOM WRITERS is an extremely touching movie. I felt so inspired by it and it made me feel proud to know that one day I hoped to be a teacher too. The movie tackles so many themes and is very thought - provoking. It can get violent at times but it's a true story, and I'm glad that they didn't sugar - coat things since the lifestyle of the students and how others react to them was a pivotal part of the story.

Erin Gruewll is an ecstatic teacher who is leaving the comfort of her own hometown to teach at Woodrow Wilson High School at Long beach. A high school which has recently had an integration program put in place. Her enthusiasm is put at a standing still when she realises that her students are in fact "At Risk" students AkA "The Untouchables" which was far from what she was expecting. It's clear what the problem is because not long before she has entered the class - she realises that all the students have arranged themselves in groups according to their racial backgrounds. Maintaining order doesn't work as the students seem out of control and regular fights break out which leave her shocked, shaken and terrified as what to do. She is told by the other teachers to ignore them as they are unlikely to pass and won't have to be death with once they leave. I think we can all agree that this very attitude towards the students may just be what's adding on to them not taking school serious. How can you expect  them to work hard when they know their teachers don't even have any faith in them. She also has problems with the head of department who declines to giving her books in case the "Worthless Students" damage and loose them. She is appalled by this, at his lack of empathy and faith.

Let me explain. These children live in gangs, or are involved in violence in some form. They live in poverty and are shot at daily, heck they are battling to stay alive. School is the last thing on their mind. The there's the matter territory within the actual school grounds, as in, if you walk into a certain space where a certain group resides they will beat you relentlessly, maybe even shoot you, yeah serious stuff.  Erin's class is in a league of its own. They laugh at her and don't take her seriously at all.

However, it's through Erin Gruwell that things start to change. She is the first person that shows she has faith in them, that wants them to do well. Soon things start to change drastically and it's a process which is both touching and remarkable to witness. You can' not be inspired by this wonderful movie. It's completely unforgettable.
