Pub. Date: April 2010 Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Format: Hardcover, 239 pages Age Range: Young Adult Source: Library

Synopsis -  It’s been a year since a meteor collided with the moon, catastrophically altering the earth’s climate. For Miranda Evans, life as she knew it no longer exists. Her friends and neighbors are dead, the landscape is frozen, and food is increasingly scarce. The struggle to survive intensifies when Miranda’s father and stepmother arrive with a baby and three strangers in tow. One of the newcomers is Alex Morales, and as Miranda’s complicated feelings for him turn to love, his plans for his future thwart their relationship. Then a devastating tornado hits the town of Howell, and Miranda makes a decision that will change their lives forever.

My Thoughts - I have seen a few reviews of this book which were on the mixed side. Being a great fan of this series I was planning on buying the third instalment soon. I was browsing around the Library today and just by chance spotted it, now it's not a big book so I could have easily missed it but I got lucky. Boy am I glad.

The story comes full circle back to Miranda and her family; they are still alive yes, eating, yes, but just about. Rations are becoming even scarce and not everyone is holding each other down as they did in the first book. It's nearly been a year since disaster struck and it's easy to hear the grief and sadness in their voices, they have lost many people and it's become clear only the youngest, best in shape with the most determination survive.

One thing this series never fails to do is suck you in it's horrific world, the whole time I was reading this book I no longer felt safe. When Miranda trudged along and found those bodies of her head teacher and class mates it hit me really hard, the fact that she knew these people made it almost to personal for me also.

Matt has become much more selfish in my opinion, before he was at least more hands on and protective of his family, now he only seems to care about his needs. This was proven to me when he selfishly happened to bring some random girl by the name of Syl, not only had he just met the girl but he had decided to marry her. He failed to notice in this case, although he did every time someone else came to stay, that they are just barely surviving and to bring some stranger because of your stupid ridden hormones was just idiotic to me.

He hardly knew her, however I can see it from his POV to, the world is ending, who knows how long he has left to live, here is this pretty girl so different from everyone else, she is desperate like him, it seems perfect to him. I guess he wants to be in love in his last days, she needs food and shelter, the perfect compromise. What annoyed me was not only his insensitivity but how he had chosen her over his mother and sister. The very mother and sister who saved his life.

Then comes the father, the father that left them when they needed him most for some girl, then stupidly enough impregnated her just when the world is about to end, gave them some pity food and went on their way and never looked back.

So, how do I feel when the father returns to his ex wife and children whom he ditched because he found no luck anywhere else? I was furious! I wanted to smack that man, how dare he return after abandoning his family and then expect them to give a damn about his wife and child. Do I sound harsh? I don't care.

I admire Miranda's mother for not complaining once and being there for him even though he didn't deserve her support. With him he brought others and expected his ex wife to feed them to. The fact that Alex and Julie were favourites of mine from the previous book might have softened me up a bit. I can basically rant about flaws within characters all day long, but again and again one thought pops up.

Life as we knew it is over, are flaws not allowed?

Jon , Miranda's younger brother and Julie , Alex younger sister immediately hit it of, they seem to share this innocence where even under such horrible circumstances they can open their hearts to genuinely wanting a friend, to have the will to care for another's feelings when everything seems so lost.

I found it remarkable, unlike everyone else's last minute relationship theirs did not seems fake but very genuine. You can't help but envy them for it, their naivety is a gift. Two others that connect are Alex and Miranda, the hardest thing with Romance at this point of time is that it is almost impossible to tell if it is real. Everyone wants to live their last days to the fullest in times such as theirs no one is really interested in being committed and getting to know each other, "feel a spark = your in love." This wouldn't be your average situation and it might not make any sense at all but right now it's the closest thing to perfect your going to get.

I have no spec of doubt when I say, in the near future there will be books that deal with a similar subject but no one will ever quite be able to carry it like Susan did. When I finished and put down the book I noticed  this big blast of orange outside, I was already filled with all this emotion and so when I moved the curtain aside and stuck my head out i saw this Sunset. I hadn't noticed a sunset in so long, but now i marvelled at it's beauty as well as Nature and life that I take for granted, that we all take for granted. I must have stood there watching the sunset fade for ten minutes but the sadness didn't fade. When a book impacts you in such a way that it makes you appreciate not only others, but life, that's when you know. You have a very special book on your hands.

My story is told, let someone else tell the next.

Synopsis: Gabriel's adventure takes in a spell in rehab, a near-death experience with fugu ovaries, a sexual encounter with an octopus, and finally an orgiastic feast in the bowels of Berlin's majestic Tempelhof Airport. Along the way we see a character disintegrate and re-shape before our eyes. Lights Out In Wonderland carries you through its many corridors of delight and horror on the back of Gabriel's voice, which is at once skeptical, idealistic, broken and optimistic. An allegorical banquet and a sly commentary on these End Times and the march towards insensate banality, DBC Pierre's third novel completes a loose trilogy of fictions, each of which stands alone as a joyful expression of the human spirit. :

My Thoughts- The story follows twenty five year old Gabriel Brockwell. Now he is a very complex character and I may have just spent half my time trying to get to know him more than anything else. Abused by his father he has been sent to rehab. Gabriel is now determined to kill himself. Now I know this is a serious issue, but the fact that it was so hilariously done made me not take him seriously at all. Every time he had the opportunity to kill himself he took the other route which made me think if he was possibly attention seeking all along, not to mention he always somehow managed to make a very serious issue - humorous. I don't think I have read anything quite like this novel before. One personal con for me might be the fact that it didn't flow for me, not exactly in such a negative way, what I'm trying to say is that the story wasn't as fast paced as I would have liked it to be.

What I noticed was that in order to know what was going on I really had to pay attention, okay so your probably thinking well duh! Isn't that what you’re supposed to do? Well I like my reads to flow fast to the point where without knowing I am already halfway through because I was so engrossed, but this time I was aware of every page I turned which was slightly off putting for me. What over rode that factor was the uniqueness of this book. It does contain some graphic scenes and explicit content so I would recommend it to 15+.

Upon deciding that he has exactly one day to live he goes in search of his good friend Smut who was equally as crazy as him. If I thought Gabriel was out of his mind then this duo was insane! The situations these two managed to get themselves stuck in were equally horrible but amusing! I laughed a lot I will admit but I can't even name a particular favourite scene because it's so inappropriate! Despite the heavy setting of the book the author managed to make Gabriel's journey an uplifting one, basically they are cringe worthy lovable, I can't say that this book is everyone's cup of tea but for those that will get into it will love it!

PS - Just to let you know, there are a lot of great characters that I have not mentioned as well as some great parts of the book, but I want to leave that for you readers to discover if you decide to take a personal peek yourself. If you do, let me know. I would love to discuss your thoughts on the book!

Thank you to Faber and Faber for providing me a copy for review

Review - City of Glass

City of Glass By Cassandra Clare

Pub. Date: March 2009 Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Format: Hardcover, 560 pages Age Range: Young Adult Source: Library

Synopsis : To save her mother's life, Clary must travel to the City of Glass, the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters—never mind that entering the city without permission is against the Law, and breaking the Law could mean death. To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family's past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. But can Downworlders and Shadowhunters put aside their hatred to work together? While Jace realizes exactly how much he's willing to risk for Clary, can she harness her new found powers to help save the Glass City—whatever the cost?

Warning - Contains spoilers from both previous books!

My Thoughts: It never worked out between Clary and Simon and although some will take that hard many like myself knew it was going to go that way, i can't exactly say this series holds a triangle since in my eyes it's always been obvious who Clary would end up with, Clary and Simon never had feelings for each other on the same level the feelings were never mutual and I'm sure for a third person to make a triangle the feelings must come from both sides which in this case they weren't but i felt it was for the best because it gave Clary the opportunity to look ahead and Simon to finally move on.

Valentine is back and seeking revenge with undercover minions all over. He will practically do anything to get what he wants even if it means hurting his own, although not many will like him but most likely hate him he has always been an interesting character for me, the fact that he is so mysterious is one factor linked to it i would think, we never really know much of his past apart from the time he was with Jocelyn we know of no parents or siblings we never really see his good side or much of the one i expect he must have once had. Throughout the book you see brief glimpses of his past life through Jocelyn and when it is mentioned how much Clary looks like her mother and the way she talks and describes Valentine doesn't make it hard to imagine that Jocelyn and Valentine's love may have been more parallel  to Jace and Clary than we might like to think. I also believe that in his own way Valentine loved Jace it's hard to say what petuated it but maybe it was through all the torture and suffering Jace faced or his refusal to let go of his humanity as he continued to feel for others even if it did make him more blocked of and distant.

I have said many times throughout give Jace a chance, i know some do not like him which at times can make me quite protective of him since he has been a favorite ever since the series first came out. I have always said at least finish the series and then if you decide the same well then fair game to you however i am always unsure about peoples dislike for Jace they always seem to have the same reason " oh hes arrogant and mean" etc so are many YA loved characters you love them though right? it almost feels as if people enjoy rambling about their dislike for him, at least he has reasons for the way he is but lets not forget the only thing that might annoy people are his snide or harsh remarks but even Simon has his fair share of those in fact a lot of the characters in the series in my opinion can get snide and arrogant at times but hey they are young beautiful and badass so a little bit of arrogance naturally comes into it, because the story is so focused on Jace the readers pretty much bring everything on him and in a way i have felt his defense mechanism is his humour as it's a big part of his personality, he hardly expresses feelings of hurt and emotion and is very proud, his humour call it arrogance if you may is his way of protecting himself, He was raised by Valentine so if you ask me he turned out just great! Have anything mean to say about him fine whatever just don't say it in fount of me because you'll just infuriate me *just throwing that out there*

In this installment you get a clearer picture of Jace's past and let me tell you it's far from pretty. Through these flashbacks you get a hint of why he is the way he is and it might even surprise you as to how did this boy not become evil like is father? It lead me to the conclusion that maybe that is why Valentine give him a second chance to start anew because perhaps in his own way he admired this boy who refused to be broken, Valentine tried to mold him but he respected Jace in his own way for fighting it.

The stakes are higher this time, A war is brewing up and tensions are high, many of Valentines followers are undercover and even part of the Clave to put it simple - you can not trust anyone, also a new triangle is a foot which made me especially giddy with Joy even though Simon may not be a favorite of mine i have always held a fondness and wished the best for him . From being this geeky selfconcious boy he has turned into a confident man and it's a uplifting transition to see also it seems that two others in particular have also noticed *insert grin* Maia and Isabelle, at this point its hard to say who i would prefer him with because we haven't been inside of the head of both girls so we don't know if they are true in their feelings as well as the reasons behind those feelings. Until i have more of a idea about the intention behind both girls ill be counting on Simon to be a man of good judgment. Also the spark between Magnus and Alec has ignited and through this hard time it will either break the two or bring them closer together.

On top of it all Clary is struggling to cope with the fact that Jace is her brother, it's almost like they are tip toeing around each other and can't bear to look each other in the eye, i feel for them because it's a predicament i wouldn't even like to imagine, some people have told me that they don't plan on reading any more after reading the brother sister thing and i tell them to read on, everything happens for a reason and it works in your favour to have faith in the author. One thing you will also look forward to is the secrets which are finally revealed!!, the things that you have been yearning to know from the previous books will finally be revealed and i am confident when i tell you, you will never see it coming the author truly knows how to keep you guessing!! Like the previous books the glamour which surrounds the Downworlders and Shadowhunters is still there, their world enthralls and excites me still, every time i find it pictured and embedded in my mind i see vividly a world filled with blood lust and glorious battle scenes and plenty of action as well as romance this is a series both males and females can enjoy.

Relationships are taking a new turn and alliances are building and crumbling. Jace and Clary are fighting a little something called love when others spend a lifetime finding theirs, to make things even more difficult a war is heading their way with Valentine right at the very top of it all who refuses to be hindered in his quest. A girl who was underestimated from the very beginning and kept on the sidelines and protected will be the one to take the step forward and be the very first to bring together the very thing that Valentine scarificed everything to destroy.

"I know it's wrong - God, it's all kinds of wrong - but I just want to lie down with you and wake up with you, just once, just once ever in my life."

So I know I haven't been blogging as much lately as I used to, I had planned to do a post sometime within the next few days originally well that is until I came across something which frankly disgusted me I had no option but to talk about this since I believe it's the most utter importance that we do not shy away but in fact discuss this because shying away will not solve anything but discussing will at least create SOMETHING

I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about something that is being talked about right now through multiple blogs and has been throughout the day. Wesley Scroggins went way out of line firstly when he thought he could diss a book that is not only a book but an inspiration to many throughout the world. This man obviously didn't know what he was dealing with when he talked trash about an author and her fantastic book and I doubt he knew there was going to be a response to this magnitude. He obviously doesn't know much about authors and damn well doesn't know much about Bloggers, you see we tend to stick together and if you mess with one author or one blogger hmmm how do  say this... you pretty much mess with us all.

So Mr Wesley whatsyourface I can imagine you right now banging your head against your desk because I'm thinking your inbox is full of hate mail telling you how stupid you are... yup stupid and foolish. I read speak two years back and recently watched the movie; Speak is the kind of book that is always inspiring and eye opening to read because although we know that such things happen all over it's another thing reading it all right there and then... It makes you think could someone you know possibly be in this situation and what would you do if you were...

Would you stop speaking? Who am I to say? today I have heard so many stories on abuse that it's weighed heavy on me, I think everyone is quite shocked and silent today a lot of people have come out and expressed what they have been through and the blogging community being as tight as it is, it really does hit hard so everyone is a little vulnerable and sensitive and most of all mad right now.

What only throws salt on the wound is the fact that this man had the nerve! To compare Rape to porn I mean how dare you?! How can you be so ignorant? What if that was your wife, your daughter would you compare it then? no you would hunt that man down and do your worst right, so why then when there is a book that has inspired millions of females out there to share their story and encouraged them to find a way out and be strong would you even think of banning that book.. Are you serous? Do you now understand how ludicrous you truly sound? You are basically saying that people should overlook and ignore Rape! Are you seriously kidding me?

I understand that it can never be easy to talk about what you have been through so I admire those that do or those that even today stay strong and have tried to move on from their ordeal. What I think this situation has also taught us all is the power of books, books wouldn't be a threat if they didn't mean something, don't movies contain sexual content - rape scenes, so then why books? I'll tell you why, books affect us here *point to heart* they stay with us long after they have been read and often influence us; this is why people try to ban books because they see them as a threat to the truth that is reality.

I don't see what hiding the truth from your child will achieve though, nothing if not disaster, not teaching your child, about rape, murder, sex bullies etc will only make them fall into it blindly because they know nothing of it! If there is no need to teach your child these things then why do you tell your child right from wrong, why do you tell your child not to talk to strangers if you truly don't want them to know about reality? Why be selfish and knit pick?

This is something that you as mothers fathers, brother, sister, uncles and grandmothers have to ask yourself including myself, how much is you child truly gaining from not knowing? People like this man only make these situations worse I only hope he understands that banning a book doesn't achieve anything, it only pushes us readers further to un ban those books and put them back on the shelves in which they belong, no man and women needs to decide what we should read US readers decide what we need to read!!

"Do you want to know a secret?" I whispered to the sister in the mirror.
"Tell me," she whispered back. "Tell me, and I'll tell you one."

Synopsis - It's tough living in the shadow of a dead girl. . . .
In the five years since her bad-girl sister Xanda's death, Miranda Mathison has wondered about the secret her sister took to the grave, and what really happened the night she died. Now, just as Miranda is on the cusp of her dreams—a best friend to unlock her sister's world, a ticket to art school, and a boyfriend to fly her away from it all—Miranda has a secret all her own.
When two lines on a pregnancy test confirm her worst fears, Miranda is stripped of her former life. She must make a choice with tremendous consequences and finally face her sister's demons and her own.
In this powerful debut novel, stunning new talent Holly Cupala illuminates the dark struggle of a girl who must let go of her past to find a way into her own future.

My Thoughts - Rand is still haunted by the death of her older sister Xanda. She watched her leave with Andre that night after a confrontation with her parents, she looked into Andre's eyes as he walked away taking her sister with him, Andre the boy that she at twelve years old fell for, her sisters boyfriend. Her sister died that night but Andre came back. If anything her mother is cold hearted and harsh as ever. Her father a mere shell that she can't seem to reach out to anymore who avoids confrontation at all costs. Xanda may be gone but she still affects Rand every single day and Rand has to live and suffer for it.

Rand has been the good girl who gets on with things ever since she can remember, kind of like her best friend Essence who is practically like family and seems to have this annoying infatuation with her mother. From Rand's point of view I wasn't even sure if she liked Essence or if she was just putting up with her. That all changes the day she meets Delaney, they quickly hit it of and Rand's popularity level shoots up, she then starts to change and goes along with Delaney's antics to the point where she is mean to her ex best friend Essence knowing that she is hurting her.

When Kamran was first introduced I actually really liked him, he wasn't bland at all but actually seemed like a great guy with an uplifting personality. He believes in Rand and I think that is what brings them so close especially the faith they have in each other. They are both in their own way thoughtful - reserved people who have this great connection that felt real to me. Things seem to be going good until they get too close and do the deed. All of a sudden everything shatters to pieces, Rand is pregnant and Kamran? He is nowhere to be seen.

For a long time Rand ignores her pregnancy because she would rather not accept it, the father of the baby wants nothing to do with her, and her mother is telling her to put it up for adoption, and on top of everything Delaney keeps blowing her of and worse still has reasons to suspect that both Delaney and Kamran might just be seeing each other. This takes the word betrayal to a whole other level, she now needs Xanda more than ever. This is a lot for a young girl like her to face, no one seems to show her any kindness or steps up and tries to talk to her. Her so - called friends leave her behind without a second thought. She will have to find out the hard way who her real friends are and that all actions have consequences.

This is the harsh reality of life and I have to say I loved the authors blatant honesty. I respected her for not sugar coating anything. On top of it all she is told her parents may not be what they seem and she knows there is only one way to find out the real truth. Ask the person who was with Xanda on that faithful night .... Andre. Here is the thing with me, I don't know if I'm just strange but I often find myself thinking the wrong things perhaps?

I felt let down by Kamran, not only was he horrible and idiotic when she needed him the most but the minute she called for Andre he was there. so when Rand mentions her interest in him I had hope, I hoped that maybe she could be happy with Andre.. is that wrong? I was saddened to not see a clearer conclusion to his story because I  felt really connected to him and he genuinely stood out to me since I took a great liking to him.

One thing I kept thinking throughout was; "Wow this is one inspiring book" I can just imagine someone who might be going through something similar to Rand being so inspired by her story, it could in my opinion heal them or help them find their way. I just thought this novel was a great eye opener. The main issue for me was Xanda. I wanted to know her and understand her. We get to see bits of her here and there but hardly enough to know her, she is mysterious yes and it makes sense in a way but I would have liked to have known her more. To understand what really pushed her over the edge. Either way we all come to the same conclusion at the end, who is to blame? You could look at it in two ways in my opinion, either. Everyone played a part or it was no ones fault.

I would say it was a bit of both. What I learned at the end was that at times the most unexpected people may reach out to you; it's also okay to forgive in order to heal. Although I had my ups and downs with Rand towards the end appreciated her because if I was in her situation I think I would have been long broken. Rand is a perfect example to young girls out there that if you put your mind and heart into it you can pull through. I have to mention that I was pretty disgusted by the selfishness of both parents. In a way they had driven both of their children away, especially the mother. She was just so inconsiderate and infuriating that she really made my blood boil!

Tell Me a Secret is beautiful written. It's gritty and in your face that is sure to teach you a lesson or two. It speaks of; love, pain, loss, redemption and second chances. Not only can we all identify with Rand but it will makes you look past the actual story and think of the story before Randa's the story that was just Xanda and Andre. Some people might struggle with the mysteriousness behind Xanda and Andre but in my opinion it'll only leave you yearning for more.

In this powerful debut novel, stunning new talent Holly Cupala illuminates the dark struggle of a girl who must let go of her past to find a way into her own future.

 Synopsis - I'd love a cup of coffee. . . . I wish she didn't hide how pretty she is. . . . I hope she didn't find out what Ben said about her. . . . I wish I knew how many calories were in a bite of muffin. . . .

Joy is used to Hearing Whispers. She's used to walking down the street and instantly knowing people's deepest, darkest desires. She uses this talent for good—to make people happy and give them what they want. But for her older sister, Jessica, the family gift is a curse, and she uses it to make people's lives—especially Joy's—miserable. Still, when Joy Hears Jessica Whisper I want to kill my Hearing dead, and kill me too if that's what it takes, she knows she has to save her sister, even if it means deserting her friends, stealing a car, and running away with a boy she barely knows—a boy who may have a dark secret of his own.
Whisper is an exhilarating debut novel from talented newcomer Phoebe Kitanidis.

My Thoughts - Joy hears things, more specifically whispers. They surround her night and day. She see's this ability of her as a gift. This might be because it's also clear her mother is a big influence in her life who also happens to be a Whisperer. Joy has almost come to depend on the ability unlike her older sister Jessica who is an outcast and in her opinion a looser. Joy uses her ability to her advantage and has risen to the top of the clique and class. What was once a close bond between both sisters has now turned into a bitter relationship because somewhere along the line Joy decided to leave Jessica behind. Joy's so called friends are pretty much as fake as her.

I saw right through Joy and her friends from the very beginning, she had created this image and personality that wasn't even her whilst her older sister thought of her ability as a curse more than anything else. Jessica knows things that are being hidden from Joy, but they have grown so far apart at this point that even Jessica can''t reach her anymore.

There was something shady about their mother from the very beginning, I just got this feeling from her that lead me to believe that I couldn't trust her.  As Whisper was a book that I had been anticipating for a long time it made the reading experience only more enjoyable. I was actually shocked at how fast I was devouring this book. I must have finished it within 2 hours or so.

Jessica comes across as; arrogant, hurtful and mean. Joy sees her as an embarrassment and wishes she would go away. At times I battled with my feeling towards Joy because I can be harsh with characters like that if i feel your wrong then I will just not like you. My instincts told me to dislike her but inside I knew there was more to her. I just needed to be patient with her.

At times I saw the pain in Jessica so clearly that it got to me that her own sister couldn't sense it. Jessica loves her so much and it was so clear to me, yet Joy couldn't see it or maybe she just didn't want to accept it. It seemed that it was easier for Joy to accept Jessica as the bad guy rather than to listen to her, I found that sad.

Meanwhile Jessica seems to be battling with her own demons, in a way one could say she is slightly damaged and on the road to self - destruction. Knowing too much can be painful not everyone wants to know every; horrible, disgusting or hurtful whisper, but in her case she has no choice but to listen. She has never come to terms with her ability. Her powers are stronger and unbearable and in her case she has no support. She feels alone and bitter. With her younger sister out of reach and parents who don't see her she has to face this on her own, but can she cope?

Lately Joy has been getting these unbearable headaches and the whispers are getting louder, but she has no idea what is going on. Jessica has tried to explain in her own way but she refuses to believe her because the last thing that Joy ever wants is to be a mess like her sister. Their father is pretty distant and in a way I don't blame him. For your family to have this ability apart from you, you are bound to feel like an outcast.

Through all of this Joy has recently met Ben who Parker also has her eyes on and outcast Jamie who seems to know more than he lets on. Things get even get more complicated when Jessica goes missing. Joy now has to come to terms with the truth that she has been neglecting and avoiding all her life, it will make her question everything including the people she loves, it will be the breaking point of a final decision, will she break free from the mother and security blanket or for the first time challenge herself and push boundaries to the extreme? Jessica is out there somewhere and for the first time it's down to Joy to do the saving.

I have to say U fell in love with this novel. The whole actual concept of hearing whispers is so  fascinating and different from everything else out there that I found it refreshing. I liked that the author pretty much gave the reader the choice to decide if they liked Joy or not. She had her faults, yes, but also her fair share of redeeming qualities.

Jamie and Joy helped each other grow and grew stronger through one another and faced their fears together. I saw Joy grow and mature before me which may have just been one of the most rewarding experiences in the novel. Everyone makes mistakes but there is always room for second chances. Although this book is majorly sad at times if you look at the bigger picture you will find that it only makes everything all the more realistic. It's so easy to get lost in Joy's world that the best advice I could give you regarding this novel would be "Stay open minded, relax and enjoy"
