"WHO ARE YOU?" I ASKED
THE NOTHINGNESS WHISPERED BACK
"I AM DEATH"
When four teens enter Glenwood High, none of them knew the secrets they held were about to become their only defence.
Love, hate and friendship now binds them. but what they don't yet know, is that this is just the beginning....
Death is calling them home.
My Thoughts - 17 year old Jane is still hurting over the death of her father, she can't understand why she wasn't taken with him and it's very clear that they were both very close. She is still suffering and weary from others, her mother has become this senseless shell and her younger sister a goth who is a mess and popping pills. The one person who has always stood by her and understood her is her best friend Wes, well that was until she made the mistake of sleeping with him now things are just plain awkward and she can feel them already drifting apart. I have to say from the very beginning i could tell i was not going to like Jane at all. She seemed all about "Me Me Me" she was completely self absorbed and everything had to revolve around her, i disliked how she talked about her mother and sister as though they were beneath her like some kind of imbeciles, her disregard to her sister' feelings further annoyed me. I felt she was pretty happy about being disgusted by her sister and judging her instead of actually talking to her, these traits made it hard to like her. She also along with Max tended to be slightly melodramatic at times.
I definitely connected with Emily right away, i tend to have a knack from an early stage about which characters I'm going to connect with and even though at first Emily was shown in a negative light i knew right away there was more to this girl. I empathized with her, Jane sees her as this low life looser, what she fails to do is see beneath the surface, Emily hides behind the makeup, clothes and attitude to drive people away, Jane might like to think she is the only one hurting but so is Emily, she just happens to not be a drama queen about it but keep it to herself, both sisters do hold secrets though, just as Jane can see premonitions of death, Emily can read peoples minds, sometimes it becomes to much for Emily which has reduced her into taking pills to temporarily make the voices fade away. Emily has also been in love with Wes for a very long time, the very boy who has been in love with Jane for a long time also. Jane of course is either oblivious or chooses to ignore the situation altogether.
New boys Max and Greg enter the scene both are brothers, both are angels, only problem? one is good and one is evil. Upon his arrival Jane is drawn to Max instantly, Max is the good sweet boy that I'm sure many girls will swoon over, personally he didn't do much for me, i didn't see much of a personality within him really or maybe he was just to much of a good boy for me? Now Greg was my type, sexy and tough i took a quick liking to him despite the uneasy feeling i got towards him. Here comes another situation, slowly but surely Wes starts to notice Emily, what angered me was how he couldn't choose between the two sisters, i mean it was clear as day Jane wasn't interested yet he had Emily who had opened herself and let him in and he kept on thinking about Jane. To me it's plain and simple if you claim your falling for someone and then act upon it and start dating them, letting a previous girl who doesn't even like you come between your current relationship is unacceptable and idiotic, if you do have feelings for someone else and don't think your ready to move on then why jump into another relationship knowing that person is serious about you? i was appalled by his behaviour and felt their was no excuse for his mistakes, personally i felt that Emily was better of without him.
Later on i actually started disliking Wes as i thought he was just as selfish as Jane, i got the impression that if Jane tossed herself at him any second he would kick Emily to the curb, his weakness towards Jane annoyed me especially since he claimed he was now falling for Emily, i don't know about you but that's not okay with me. Pick one and stick with it, i felt sorry for Emily she didn't deserved to be stringed along, i think she is such a great character to relate to, people have let her down, she's lived with having to accept that her father never wanted anything to do with her, she is practically invisible to her mother and her sister looks at her with disgust not to mention the boy she is in love with, is still in love with her sister... and Jane thought she had it bad huh?

Jane thinks she knows... but she has no idea,
Turns out i was right when it came to my instincts about Greg, his motives aren't always clear, to me it just seemed like the poor kid was bored and felt like making his brothers life a living hell. Greg does tend to be on the creepy side and i dealt with that because you know he is pretty hot stuff but then he just when on a whole other level of crazy and i didn't like him either anymore. However i have reason to believe although there is no excuse for his actions, Greg may have his reasons, his past being one of them, I'm counting on the next installment to shed some light on that, I'm hoping there are some redeeming qualities in him because i see potential in him and i seriously want to like him as he always stood out to me more than Max. What i enjoyed the most about this book was the narration that you got to see through multiple characters, it was interesting to hear their side of the story and what they were individually thinking at certain times. I have to admit, if i got busy and put the book down for a while i right away missed it which made it clear that i really had connected with the novel as well as the characters. I think it's pretty clear that i enjoyed Emily' character the most, the novel holds some interesting concepts and was fast paced, the ending tied up with a twist leaving a lot open for a sequel which i can't wait to get my hands on!!
Thank you to the author for providing me the copy for review :)
