"I saw him him-hip deep in some icy water chasing a book, and I saw a boy lying in bed, imagining how a kiss would taste from his next-door neighbour. He does something to me, that boy. Every time. It's his only determent. He steps on my heart. He makes me cry"

My Thoughts- The Book Thief is definitely one of a kind. I have to say due to hearing so many fantastic things about it and finding hints that this novel was special gave me more than very high expectations of it. It wasn't very fast paced though surprisingly, not to say it was slow as it wasn't at all. It flowed, but I also knew that in the novel being at a slower pace than expected I had the chance to savour moments- meaning throughout I had to use several bookmarks to mark special moments that I could go back to and read.

I don't think I have ever used so many bookmarks for one book. I think that should have been a sign in itself, although the novel gelled with me well I had it in my mind when I was halfway through that it had just reached over four stars and crossed to five. I felt it fit perfectly with the book since you have to be a pretty fantastic book to reach five. It took me to arrive close to the last few chapters when I had finally finished the book and sat silently taking everything in that I realised it deserved more, and that I had somewhere along the line underestimated The Book Thief.

It is 1939 and Nazi Germany is at war, at war in a way with itself. Hitler is reining the country and has spread his thoughts like poison polluting his people: convincing his people that all Jews must be eradicated. I have studied the man may it be through History class or through research or just in my mind, but no matter how many times I read about it or see pictures, each time it is horrifying as the first and I think: you monster, you coward.

I think of the Nazi and think what do I call them? I think of evil and of a country who forgot of humanity for a moment too long and believed themselves to be God, they forgot about mercy and regrets when it came to Jews whilst they kissed their children goodnight, what do I call these people after all these years. I just don't know. What I can tell you despite it all is that there is something sane telling the story, although I'm not exactly sure what it is. Grim reaper is the only thing I have right now, in other words, Death. Call it what you like. At times this Grim reaper seems almost human. It can touch solid objects and feel emotions, yet it takes lives what do you call that? Does death feel, cry, hurt, I never thought so, I always thought Death felt nothing, just emptiness, but Marcus Zusak has another take on death, something I could get used to, he makes me even like death a little.

This story is about the Journey of a little German girl under the name Liesel who looses her mother and brother within the same day. She watches her brother fade right before her and is let go by her mother and fostered by another family shortly after. Her brother has been buried in the snow without a moment’s thought: just one of the many cruelties of reality. Whilst her brother is being buried she comes across a book, a sort of a guide for grave diggers, of course she will not know this for some time for she can't read. Upon her arrival to her new home she meets the Hubermanns consisting of husband: Hans and wife Rose.

Rose comes across as quite horrid and mean and gives both Liesel and Hans curses on a daily basis, but eventually you start to notice that she comes to love Liesel at once and saves her little curses for those she holds dearly. I instantly hit it of with Hans and completely understood the bond between Hans and Liesel all too well , he is exactly like my father. The both of them happen to share the exact same bond I had with my father when I was her age, only the thing that brought us together was music.

Hans taught her how to read whilst my father taught me to appreciate and fall In love with music :) His gentleness and calm demeanour, loving yet stern when needn't be and polite has my father written all over it, it made me smile, Hans made me smile.

Rudy is another favourite. Rudy and Liesel quickly develop a close playful friendship and they practically grow up together. Stealing ironically is what brings them closer, she is labelled The Book Thief when she steals her first book and does many times after, once she starts, her hunger for words and books grows. Rudy is quite protective of her and extremely caring, the bond that they both share in a way is bitter-sweet. Liesel is very lovable; her curiosity, bravery and tom boyishness is very endearing, not to mention her hunger to read and learn is just admirable.

I loved everything about her, it's hard to think about the things this girl will have to face within the next few years as she has been through enough as it is but Death is not quite through with her yet. There is a lot of tragedy I must warn you. Max is the perfect example of that, his story is so saddening, but his story also offers a lot of hope and loyalty.

I held it together, but towards the end I just let go and was in a fit of tears. Many will have their opinion on the ending; I’m still not sure what to make of it, just that it is bitter-sweet and heart-breaking.

"Please believe me when I tell you that I picked up each soul that day as if it were newly born. I even kissed a few weary, poisoned cheeks. I listened to their last, gasping cries. Their French words. I watched their love-visions and freed them from their fear.

Goodbye 2010!

You know, it's never really bothered me in the past when a new year has arrived, but for some reason it is bothering me right now. Maybe it's because I'm practically counting down the hours, or because of everyone's goodbye posts. It almost makes me feel kind of sad. This year has had its fair share of good and bad. The good, I would say, overlapping the bad. There are many people I want to thank: my readers and followers for always supporting me, for bringing me down a notch when I needed to be. I have got to know some of you so well that I consider you genuine close friends.

I want to thank the authors and publishers who believe in my Blog and feel I'm deserving of reviewing and reading their work, the thought of this only makes me want to work harder. I have a long way to go yet and I will get there eventually. Alongside that thought there were some fantastic débuts authors, too many to name, but all left a lasting impression!

There are so many blogs out there that I admire and look up to which only makes me want to work harder. The survey I recently made has made me realise how criticism from friends or bloggers can only work in positive ways. I want to strive towards a point where I am fully content with my blog and feel I am at my peek, right now I am nowhere near that stage. Cultivating my craft will be an interesting journey and I hope I will grow as an individual alongside my blog.

Lastly I want to mention those who do not blog anymore. No matter how much time has passed, I want them to stay with us, just because a blogger leaves does not mean they should be forgotten, not in my opinion. When it comes to this case I often find myself going to their blogs just to have a look, in my opinion a dormant blog is better than a permanently deleted blog because a permanently deleted blog makes me even sadder.

I always remind myself how things were when I first started out: I felt like an outcast and was in awe and so envious of all these well known popular bloggers -  I am now great friends with many of them :) I am also thankful for the bloggers I have really connected with, they are a big reason behind motivating me and bettering myself.

Originally I wasn't too sure about naming names but what they heck, these are my girls/ boys , and I am truly fortunate to have so many people beside me. Kay and Andrea we have known each other for so long that you’re like sisters to me. Not to mention Mikey boy, I have known you nearly as long as Andrea and Kay and you are all kinds of awesome *you know who you are :P* Audrey, Beth, Kelli & Natalie, Sara, Jami, Iffath, Jenny, Jacob, Erika, Natalie, Stephanie, Karen, Linna, Leilani, Tori, Amelia, Justine, Eleni, Nina, Juju Carrie, Adriana, DJ, Chas , Casey, Alyssa, Darlyn, Cari and Liz, you have all been with me from the very beginning, it has been an honour having you all by my side, and I know that you’re always there when I need a good chat or to vent. I appreciate all of you; you mean a lot to me, you know that right? Blogging wouldn't be the same without you.

Thank you for sticking with me, hopefully we will share many years to come together. I will leave you all with a blogger I still remember who does not blog anymore. Stacy at Lost In Ink. If you recall some bloggers you were very fond off and do not blog anymore, link them in the comments section so that we can remember them together :)

My Thoughts - If I Could Fly, is a heart-warming novel with a futuristic feel to it. At first I did get the feeling that it was aimed towards younger readers, but then I realised that the protagonist herself is 13-14. It is told from her point of view throughout which in result gives the reader the biggest impact. Through her, you get the instant feel that there really is this very young girl on the run all alone and scared. As things start to come back to her in snippets it becomes apparent that there is more to her story than meets the eye.

I must have read the novel within two hours or so, it’s not exactly short but not as long as novels as I am used to, so it took no time at all. Although I felt some things were not explained in great detail it did not, however result in me enjoying the book less, but actually often lead to a mysteriousness that flowed throughout the book leaving me slightly confused at times.

A Virus has spread leading many casualties. The Government has decided the animals are to blame; they have to blame someone right? Things become confusing for Calypso, she knows that she is running away from something but has no recollection of what exactly. Alongside that she is also injured but yet again has no idea how.

Alfie is the first person she ever considers a friend post – running away. Their friendship is just lovely, there are not many characters at all which I have never encountered before, but I think that only adds to her loneliness. The first time Alfie was introduced I felt this burst of joy alongside her, feeling happy and relieved that someone around her age who seemed so open and warm wanted to talk to her.

Calypso is living on her own with the company of a stuffed Teddy Bear and a Rabbit, they are in a way her companions. It’s sad to see her predicament. I don’t think I could handle such loneliness even at my age. She is a strong and determined - a character who I found very endearing. Overall it was a satisfying and pleasant read with a unique concept which always kept things interesting.

Before I get on to the task at hand I would like to introduce you to a very new blogger! In fact she just started yesterday. We all know how tough and nerve wracking the start of blogging can be, especially if you have not gotten to know anyone yet, feel fee to hop over to say hi to Faye over at her blog "Little Voice"

This moment is very important and special to me, the reason being for the first time I will get an idea of what you guys really think of me and my blog, okay so I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous but what the heck I would rather know the honest truth than you sugar coat your thoughts. In being blatant there will be more room for improvement. Try not to be put off by all the questions because they represent the whole year that you have taken this journey with me. Be as ruthless if possible LOL I am all for it. If I can be harsh I have nothing against you being so too if it is going to benefit me. The Survey of 2010

This really isn't my kind of thing, but when I came across it at Nina's blog - We Adore A Happy Ending. For some reason it just seemed really relevant and important, I think it's a fantastic idea and I think one of these should be done by bloggers every year, it’s a great way to wrap the year up. The original blog behind the idea is The Perpetual page - turner  Feel free to hop over there and join in!

Survey Part 1

1. Best book of 2010? Hmm, The best book of 2010, ill pick a few since I'm picky, those that stood out to me this year, in my opinion would be The Sky is everywhere, The Book Thief, Thirteen Reasons Why, Perfect Chemistry and the Kite runner since I re read it :)

2. Worst book of 2010? I have to go with Crescendo, it was just wrong in every single way.

3. Most Disappointing Book of 2010? Would be Paranormalcy, Crescendo would also fit in this category, reason being my expectations for both were huge and were not met at all, with saying that it can change things when your disappointed with a book because it means that you expected more, meaning you might just give the next a try, in other words make me love the next one.

4. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2010? The Book Thief, surprised? For me The Book Thief could have ended horrendously, this would be due to expecting something different, my expectations got the better of me and nearly lead me to not see it for what it really was, I finally got it towards the end thankfully, it was just a flash and suddenly it clicked, everything made sense, I couldn't believe I had even thought otherwise!, sure showed me huh, I love to be proved wrong, especially by the novel itself!

5. Book you recommended to people most in 2010? Read Hush Hush and Perfect Chemistry to see the essence of perfect chemistry, to give you a life changing perspective on life, read Thirteen reasons Why, To question the potential of our future society Read Delirium By Lauren Oliver and Matched By Ally Condie

6. Best series you discovered in 2010? The Infernal Devices, I really appreciate her work now, regardless of the new authors and titles coming out, her work throughout has always stood out and left it's mark I look forward to the second in the series. Others would include The Last Survivors series, Hunger games and Vampire Academy By Richelle Mead.

7. Favourite new authors you discovered in 2010? Wow this is a tough one, Angela Morrison, Heidi R Kling, Phoebe Kitanidis , Ally Condie, Jennifer Echols, Andrea Cremer, Marcus Zusak and Lauren Oliver, LJ Smith and Jay Asher. all in my opinion brought something unique and great to the table this year, they are extremely talented and I look forward to more of their work.

8. Most hilarious read of 2010? Come to think of it, I have never really looked out or read books just for humour so I haven't encountered many, one that I do remember which may have made me an emotional wreck also managed to make me laugh. How? I have no idea, I still find it confusing as to how I can be crying and then laughing like mad the next minute, but PS I Love you by Cecelia Ahern really did that for me.

9. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2010? Unwind By Neal Shuasterman, absolutely amazing, I have never read anything quite like it, he is pure talent.

10. Book you most anticipated in 2010?  Clockwork Angel By Cassandra Clare definitely, there are one or two others but this is perhaps the only novel that came close to meeting my expectations.

11. Favourite cover of a book you read in 2010? Nightshade By Andrea Cremer, it's just gorgeous.

12. Most memorable character in 2010?  What a great question, Lucas in the novel Lucas By Kevin Brooks was a character that really left me shaken he is a masterpiece in itself.  Rose from Vampire Academy and Katniss from the Hunger Games are both the kind of females I admire and strive to be like, strong, confident, independent and ambitious. Excluding fan girly characters I go ga ga over because then I would have a massive list: P

13. Most beautifully written book in 2010?  That's a huge huge statement to make, but, hmmm It's between the Sky is Everywhere and The Giver, both exquitely written in their own right. (For me beautifully written is based on the kind of writing that is special and has the biggest impact on it's reader and these two fit that bill)

14. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2010? The Giver By Lois Lowry, this book is in a niche of it's own, nothing compares.

15. Book you can't believe you waited UNTIL 2010 to finally read? Before I fall and The Book Thief, it's ridiculous how long it took me to get around to reading them!

End of Survey Part 11 - Optional-

1.  New favourite book blog you discovered in 2010? Wondrous reads, Love reading X and The Bookologist, most of my other favourite blogs were discovered previously.

2. Favourite review that you wrote in 2010? The Sky Is Everywhere not was it the very first book to receive a full 6 star rating but I felt my passionate feelings for the book really showed.

3. Best discussion you had on your blog?  I don't think I have a favourite really, I am always discussing with my readers, it's one of the things I really enjoy about blogging, you can find me discussing mostly on my feature A Fantasy lovers thoughts, some examples would be me discussing, loosing followers Here or friendship and how bloggers can feel so connected without having met each other here , also I did a post about book banning and speaking out if I recall, I enjoy discussing things that feel taboo or that other bloggers tend to shy away from, I can be rebellious like that :D

4. Most thought-provoking review or discussion you read on somebody else's blog? You know it's hard to come by those, many focus on writing the review so thought provoking or going into so much detail or even getting personal doesn't come much into reviews, I would like to see more thought provoking reviews though, that are inspirational and really showcase a bloggers love for a novel.

5. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)? The Becca Fitzpatrick signing, it was the first signing I have ever gone to and the first time I had met a blogger, I met Iffath and Jenny there, that was definitely a special moment :)

 6. Best moment of book blogging in 2010?  Easy. The whole discussion behind banning books and speaking out, I mean I have never seen everyone come together like that, nothing mattered that moment, every blogger and Author put their heart and soul into their posts, people shared things unimaginable, we got to know so many bloggers on a level we never thought we would, we got to know Authors, how we all came together just shows, when it comes down to it at the end of the day, truly? Despite the hoo haa and drama we have at times. Authors and Bloggers genuinely care and have each others back. The banning topic is pure evidence of it. That's something I will always cherish and it really made me proud to be part of the community.

7. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)  Book Depository!! is a complete life saver, without it things would be a disaster, I mean that length of time books take to publish in the UK and many other countries can just be ridiculous so buying yourself a US copy makes it all worthwhile.

BR - Paranormalcy

  • Paranormalcy By Kiersten White

Paperback: 352 pages Publisher: HarperCollins Children's (January 2011)
 Genre: Young Adult    Source: Publisher

Rating:

My Thoughts -  Evie a 16 year old girl who is part of an organisation called "International Paranormal Containment Agency." An Agency that locks up the bad guys you could say. The only thing with saying that is, that many have their own version of whom and what are the bad guys.

You have a lot of Paranormal going on in this one; Werewolves, Vampires, Shifters, Hags - the lot! The first thing I was slightly disappointed by was the fact that Vampires were described as corpses, I mean really? There went down my hope of Vampire sexiness in the book!

Although she is just sixteen Evie has a lot on her shoulders. Being able to see right through paranormal glamour she is literally the force that is keeping the Agency together. Without her they wouldn't hold much of a chance. She has grown up with the Agency and has come to accept the bad with the good, the bad often being fairy's. Now they are described as nasty and conniving things, pretty on the outside but down right nasty from within. One fairy in particular has his eye on Evie: being Reth.

It was clear to me that there was made out to be a love triangle in the book, hardly. In my opinion there were only two people who mutually liked each other. Reth didn't even seem to like Evie for any genuine reason or at least know what he really wanted half of the time anyway. Evie didn't even seem interested. From what I had read of reviews and hype I expected there to be a solid triangle, and a lot of chemistry going on from all three sides.

As far as chemistry was concerned I didn't really see anything between Lend and Evie. She just seemed to be crushing on him and came across as quite childish, although she could be endearing at times. My issue may have been that I could never connect with her throughout the novel no matter how much I tried. Also, for some reason I felt as though the novel was perhaps aimed at a younger audience. I'm eighteen but I felt slightly hesitant when I started reading, it didn't take me long to finish it so don't get me wrong, I just expected something different I guess.

What I did keep hoping throughout the book was for Evie to give Reth a chance and for Reth to stop acting so creepy. I mean, he seriously wasn't doing himself any favours when he yapped about how she had to spend eternity with him in fairy land or whatever. He had this dark edge that I liked, but I felt he wasn't developed to his full potential as I didn't see a softer side to him or any explanation for his actions. Originally had he been written with a hint of likeability he might have stood a chance, he was the only character who really intrigued me, but I felt that the possibility of there being more to him was not left open to the reader. I expected more from him I guess, I expected there to be more to him. Lend didn't appeal to me either, and the MC fell flat so by the end of it I was left with having no one to relate to, like, or look forward to. That was disappointing

I think I expected what I thought the synopsis and praise let on: a flirty, dark, roller - coaster ride. That is not what I got. My expectations got the better of me which has not happened until now. I had just read so many gushing reviews from so many blogs that I look up to that I never doubted not loving it. This may just be a case of some bloggers going along with others and writing a positive review for the heck of it which is seriously worrying me right now and making me doubt some things, or maybe it's just me and I have got everything completely wrong!?

What saved the book for me was the whole concept behind it: being the Agency itself which really interested me as well as all the paranormal creatures coming together in one book and respectively having very much their own identity. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed when it comes to the sequel as I do see potential.

BR - Nightshade

Nightshade By Andrea Cremer

Paperback: 480 pages Publisher: ATOM (28 Dec 2010)  Genre; Young Adult/ Paranormal
Source: Received From Atomics

My Thoughts - I have been yearning to yet my hands on this novel for what seems like eternity, so when I received it for review I wasted no time and dug right in! What was obvious to me from the get-go was that the novel itself was very fast paced, and that it was all that it promised when praise included it to be sizzling and seductive!

I really didn't realise that it was well over 400 pages until I had finished it. There isn't a dull moment throughout and you are completely hooked from the beginning.

Calla is the Alpha female from the Nightshade pack whilst Ren who is promised to her is from the Bane Pack. They seem to have a love-hate relationship, where Ren takes pleasure in teasing her and Calla in ignoring him. What is obvious, is that, underneath their little mind games both have genuine feelings for each other.

Things change when Calla comes across human boy Shay, and when doing the forbidden in saving him she places her life on the line as well as her packs.

What I particularly enjoyed was that all the characters had their own story and as the reader I felt like I had gotten to know each and every one of them perhaps more than others. It was tough for me at times to accept Ren and Calla's attitude: in which I am relating to their pack mates. Although I understand that they have a higher authority I guess I just wasn't to keen on their attitude, I can be a softy like that  ;D

Another thought that came to mind when I read more about Calla was: Choose! Seriously, I don't care if you’re an alpha pack leader because that is no excuse to throw yourself at one boy then the other. I found her behaviour at times unacceptable. It was almost like she didn't care that she was obviously using and hurting both in the process. Her actions when it came down to Lust were just baaaad, seriously girl control thou self and choose! LOL

Now I have heard of this whole Team Ren and Shay thing for a while and I completely get it now! Is there even any competition? Shay is sweet and everything, but I really don't think there is any competition when it comes down to Ren and Shay.. REN all the way; hot, sarcastic, loyal, loving, and sensitive. What else do you want Calla dear?

The thing is, I already know who she is going to choose. I could be completely wrong but am I the only one who thinks it's obvious that she will choose Shay even though it should be Ren? Gah why do the sweet boring boys always get the girl and not the smexy bad boy?

What I have to say about the author is that I admire her for bringing something new to the table, especially when it comes to this new world that she has obviously created with putting much thought and research into it. I loved the idea of the Keepers and the history that went behind it as well as the hierarchy. I have to tell the readers this though, this is not in any way an emotional or thought - provoking read in any way, in case that is what you are looking for. That is not what Nightshade is about. It is full on entertainment for the readers with some intense, and heated *insert-wink* scenes here and there.

I think the real problems arrived when I found that I may have just preferred some of the secondary characters to Calla, I mean that can never be a good thing under any circumstance in my opinion. However, I am pleased to say that there are not any characters that fall into the background which is rare, so I commend her on giving each of her characters a voice.

Each had their chance to shine but somewhere along the line because of this Calla may have just been left to the side. If there was a little more effort put into making Calla likable like Ren, who may have not have acted in the gentlemanly of ways at times but was found redeemable and even likable towards the end, I would have rated the book much higher. Ansel - Calla's brother and Callas second in command Bryn really shined and made the story in my opinion, what it is.

I am actually stumped on this one, it was completely and utterly addictive. It is more than a four star, but not really a five and you see I don't have halves in my rating system so I am really at a loss. This I guess can be the downside of a rating system.

Shay if I'm honest I found slightly bland. Whilst Ren did aggravate me at times due to the way he treated Calla, I couldn't stay angry at him for too long. He seemed larger than life compared to Shay. There was this sensitivity and vulnerability that you may notice of Ren if you look deep enough and that drew me. I still believe that there is much more to Ren which will be discovered in Wolfsbane. Calla although I did try to like her I found due to her thoughtless actions that I simply couldn't connect with her.

Gosh this is tough! I really am not giving you guys a final verdict like I normally do huh? I will finish off with letting you all know that Nightshade is definitely one of the most entertaining and enthralling books I have read this year, don't let my thoughts sway you from at least giving it a chance because without a doubt it is a book that you should give a go.

You might find that you will enjoy it more of you don't think too much into it when reading it. I found the flaws that I did literally as I wrote this review. An overall enjoyable read that will leave you hungry for the next. Despite my conflicted thoughts I am more than eager to get my hands on Wolfsbane, I want it now! Just to say I will not be rating this book.
