"Really? Was that how you quit me?" And just like that, without thinking, without saying it in my head first, without arguing with myself for days, it's out there. "So," she says, as if speaking to an audience under the bridge. "He finally says it." <-- One of my favourite quotes. Gave me goosebumps.
Remember that loyal, sweet Adam. The kind, naive Mia? Both gone.
But it's Adam that gives you the first blow.
Nothing prepared me for this boy who was so angry. Full of rage, bitterness and absolute hate. He is so full of angst, pain and so lost that even his rock star status and the all the girls seem a blur. He's never forgiven Mia for leaving him. Never stopped wondering why, never stopped wanting her.
Until the day comes when they come face to face.
What do you say to the boy you walked away from three years ago? What you you say to the girl that made you into the person you can't stand to look at in the mirror any more. Oh it's intense and tough to watch on as the two struggle to come to terms with one another. It's completely heart - breaking and so very sad.
WHERE SHE WENT completely caught me off guard. It's nothing like IF I STAY. It's more intense more grittier, more urgent. MORE everything.
What do I think of Mia? I think what she did is close to unforgivable. I think I realised that I no longer like her. And frankly, I'm ok with that. I felt that she was an extremely selfish person and not likeable at all. At least Adam is honest with himself, this girl is just all about being arrogant and in denial.
And the ending? I was ready for the alternative. I had mentally prepared myself for something horrible, but bearable. This was one of those instances where I was actually ready to embrace a messed up ending, because I felt it needed to end this way. So what happens? Chickens out, is what happens. Couldn't go through with it, afraid readers would be furious or wanted to cling on to a happy ending although there shouldn't have been is what happened.
Despite what I thought about the ending or Mia, this book gets those 4 stars, because guys, it really is just that wonderful. It is gorgeously written, and there are moments in this book that make you want to look away and make you ache for them. I don't know if I could read this a second time around. It may be a fantastic read, but all of Adam' anger, angst, and all the guilt and hurt between these two makes it a draining reading experience. So although it might not be much of a preferred re - read, it is definitely an impacting first read.

“I want to make her cry and then lick up the tears.”
“That’s the thing you never expect about grieving, what a competition it is.”
“She's still beautiful. Not in an obvious Vanessa LeGrande or Byrn Shraeder kind of way. In a quiet way that's always been devastating to me.”

“You know, I thought about that a lot these last couple of years," She says in a choked voice. "About who was there for you. Who held your hand while you grieved for all that you'd lost?”
