L.J. Smith - Discussion Post
I know I am on the late side on this, but unlike usually where I would head right into a discussion, I had to think long and hard about whether any of this was even true. Once I was positive as could be that this indeed was true I had to calm down. I'm good now so I think now is the best time than ever to talk about this.
Despite taking some time knowing I should cool of first hasn't really taken away the fact that I am still frustrated and disappointed. A lady I admire a great deal known as L.J. Smith, has just informed us that she is no longer allowed to write the Vampire Diaries series because she refused to make it a strictly Stefan-Elena Romance. For those who are still reading the series, or have read them; are aware that there has been a great deal of chemistry between; Elena and Damon, and Bonnie and Damon for some time now. Stefan to be honest I never really took a liking to anyway, so to tell me that L.J. Smith is being told by her publishers that she no longer will write her own damn series because she wants to follow her heart and continue writing the series the way she feels is right is just ridiculous! She is the freaking author! Do you hear me, no stupid ghostwriter is ever going to take L.J. Smiths place.
HERE is the post that explains in detail from the author herself.
Look I am always upfront with you guys so I want to tell you the truth from my side anyway. I loved the first few books in the series as a young teen some years ago. The ones that were written recently weren't much to my liking. I read them because I will always love the series no matter what, the strong fondness I feel for them even now was always enough to go back to the series and re-read to my hearts content. I continued to read the series because I love Damon, and I love Bonnie, and seriously I wanted to know who Damon ends up with. Now I am being told that the reason behind me continuing the series is not even going to be followed through. Look, for all us Vampire Dairies lovers who have read the series, or are reading it can say that Damon for the majority of us has aways stood out. Bonnie has always stood out. Now you want there to be less Bonnie and Damon, are you stupid or just plain delusional?
L.J. Smith wanted to continue the book on the exact basis that kept me reading, she knows exactly what her fans want, what her fans want is exactly what her heart is telling her to write. She knows us best, not some fake ghostwriter who has nothing to do with any of it.
It's mentioned that people will not know the difference between the ghost writer' writing, and LJ Smith'; how damn disgusting and insulting. L.J. Smith is the original, she wrote Vampire Diaries and created vampire love triangles in my opinion. We have had many ever since, but dammit! no one can touch L.J. Smith' work. How dare they even think of it. It's like telling JK Rowling that she can't finish of Harry Potter, like Suzanne Collins being told she can't finish The Hunger Games series. It's unthinkable, only it has happened.
Turns out there was a contract which included that the series belonged to Alloy Entertainment through Book Packaging meaning they can replace her at any given moment, she may have wrote the series, but legally? The Series belongs to them. What an awful deal. Of course when she realised what Book Packaging even was it was way to late. The whole thing is unfortunate and unfair and I don't give a damn about some ridiculous contract, they are still in the wrong, and such inconsideration and ruthlessness pisses me of to no end.
To someone who should be able to hold her head high at the fact that she made us fall in love with vampires long before any had, made us recognise love triangles long before anyone had, it is a great sense of betrayal, and I seriously can't even imagine how torn up she must be right now. This is a moment of mourning and I wouldn't blame her if she wants to be left alone for a while. Nothing can be harder for a writer than being told they can't continue something they started or worse yet, their work being taken over by some random person. It is times like these that makes me questions the world of a writer. Is it so rewarding when you have moments like these? To have earned your respect and to have a solid fan-base to only to get slapped in the face without a second thought? She is a legend to me, and I hold her in the highest regard. I am still fuming for the injustice done to her and the series.
I know many were never that fond of the later books like myself, and looking back maybe the series wouldn't have had the impact on me that it had, if I had I read them now because I do think looking back they are aimed towards the younger teens, but that has never- ever changed my opinion on the series and never shifted my love for it. I guess I read them in a point of my life that was right for *Me* I read them at a age where a young girl could identify and completely fall head over heels for it. I read it at the right time, and I'm thankful for that. What are your thoughts on all of this, and seriously, what will be the future of this well loved series with the author no longer writing it?
