Love Story By Jennifer Echols
My mind ran frantically through the possibilities, each more awful with the one before. Hunter was dating a beautiful brain surgeon with a taste for younger men. Hunter was devotedly visiting his blond girlfriend from the shower, who had fallen ill. Hunter was ill himself. He was dying slowly. He wanted the rest of his short life to be as normal as possible. That's why he couldn't let me know where he was going. He didn't want my grandmother to snatch his college education away now that he couldn't fulfill his obligation as heir. I had to find out. I stepped into the street. (Someone tell me if this is supposed to be funny because I found it hilarious!

My Thoughts - Erin refused to take business as a major at college, so what did her grandmother do? Stripped her of all her inheritance and gave it to her stable boy Hunter. Talk about tough love! (
Erin has always wanted to be a novelist, so she goes with her gut and leaves all the wealth and her home behind and heads to the busy streets of New York alone to peruse her dream. She's taking on creative writing and has delved in with some fantasies of her own that just happen to contain Hunter. Unfortunately, on the day she is to read her story who else to step into class than the muse himself.
Love Story is a fun read that you can lay back with enjoy. Sure, it's about this young girl who has a past and ironically as much as she wants to hide it, astoundingly enough, seems to do the exact opposite through her stories, but she's also a girl who has lost her mother and never knew her father. Feeling alone and lost in her case would be an understatement. It's admirable, however, to see Erin be so determined and stand up on her two feet. She could have easily kept the inheritance but she didn't. She has quickly adjusted to this new life that is so different from the wealthy one she once owned. Adjusted to the thrift shops, the stingy flats, and the lack of support to fall back on should something go wrong.
Hunter is an all too reminder of the life she once had: a reminder of something that was stripped from her and given into his palms. She should hate him, but she can't quite make herself do just that. From there on there's plenty of banter, playing/teasing that goes on between the two. One making the other jealous, trying to make the other break first, give in, admit their feelings. Talk about mind games, huh? And it's all pretty fun to watch I suppose. The story itself can be seen as this big fantasy: the rich girl, the demanding horrible grandmother, lack of parents, and a charming, gorgeous stable boy: a little too good to be true if you ask me. But it makes an enjoyable read.
There was one thing that annoyed me about Erin . When her stories were doing more bad to others then good why didn't she just stop writing about him. She could have written about something else entirely, but it was always about her life, about Hunter. And then she would be surprised when things fucked up. I mean what did you expect? Also she was such a sucker for him hahaha. I think she should have tried to play a little hard to get, or convincingly at least. I'm sure he knew from the get go just how into him she was.. poor girl :D
Love Story has Echols trademark sexual tension: she writes those intense moments amazingly well -- only it wasn't as intense or thrilling in this book because, well, they both already knew that they liked each other. They just happened to spend the reminder of the book playing cat and mouse. I've seen how amazing the author can write, the kind of chemistry she can build through reading Going too Far *her best work to date*-- let's just say she knows how to write her romance. Through reading that book I know just how much potential this author has, and that's why I raise the bar every time I hear she's written a new book. Okay so it might be unfair to have certain expectations of an author based of one book, and obviously you can't expect all of the authors work to match that up to that one favourable book, but hey, it's what keeps me eagerly waiting for future work. In my opinion having high expectations is better than having no expectations at all: don't you think?
Love Story wasn't as good as her previous work but somewhere in the middle. So, Love Story is a decent read if you can get past the predictable plot. Honestly? I'm disappointed. Probably because I expected it to be better, she can do better in my opinion, a lot better.
"I didn't mean to fall asleep out there. I thought you would come out and talk to me in your - belly dancing costume." He nodded to the sad pool of green gauze that had fallen from its hook in the corner. I thought what he meant by this was, I put my hands all over that girl in the shower and then wrote a story about doing her. I also wrote a story about doing a fortune - teller. So I don't see why in the world you would not come to Jordis's room and flirt with me. This seemed to be what he was implying, but I couldn't be sure. (Can I just say that the quote killed me?!! Hahahaha I mean how did she even come up with that? LOL.)
